Top 5 Benefits of Wood Toys on Development

June 01, 2022

Wooden kids toys are quickly gaining traction in the homes and schools of young children. But why? Simply put, they support child development in ways that battery-operated, mass produced toys just can't. The benefits of wooden blocks, wooden stacking toys and other wooden toys are countless. As a early childhood expert, I'd like to talk to you about what I believe to be the top 5 benefits of wooden toys on child development.

Sensory Development

Child development researcher Jean Piaget tells us that from 0-2, children are learning about the world around them via their senses. This happens through interaction with their environment. A tremendous amount of cognitive development occurs during this time. With that in mind, knowing that children are touching, seeing, hearing, tasting (sometimes) and smelling every single they they interact with--wouldn't we all want to advocate for toys that are made from healthy materials? Materials that are safe for children to touch and put in their mouths. Natural materials like wood create a different type of sensory experience for children than chemically laced plastic. One last note on sensory development. Battery operated toys that make lights and sounds are overstimulating for young children and simply not developmentally appropriate or beneficial.

Building Creativity

Wooden toys for children support creativity because they are open-ended. What do I mean by "open-ended"? It means that there are a variety of ways to use them. There isn't a right or wrong way to play with creative building toys. For example, wooden alphabet blocks can be used to build, practice letter recognition and more. There isn't a right or wrong way to build a castle out of wooden blocks. There is no limit to the amount opportunities for creativity to emerge when interacting with wooden toys; especially wooden blocks. Wooden toys are creative toys.

Fine Motor Skills Development

Wooden toys allow children to practice grabbing, stacking, building and more. All of these activities involve the use of children's hands, which is where fine motor development occurs. Why do we care about fine motor development? Children need the strength that they gain through fine motor play to begin writing and using other handheld tools later. Also, fine motor skills strengthen eye-hand coordination. Wooden toys are the perfect fine motor skills toys.

Environmentally Friendly

If you believe in science, then you believe that our planet is in serious trouble. As consumers we are creating more waste that ever before. By choosing Eco-friendly toys, like wooden toys, we are doing our part to ensure a healthy planet for our children's futures. In addition, wooden toys last longer. They don't break easily and are here for the long haul. They can be handed down not only to younger siblings, but younger generations as well. We choose reusable water bottles and straws, why wouldn't we give the same care to our toy choices? Think of all of the plastic that would be spared if we all chose wooden toys for our homes and classrooms. Additionally, less is more when you have quality wooden toys. You can cut the number of toys in your home or classroom in half by swapping plastic toys for wooden toys.

Educational Value

The single most valuable thing you can do for your child's future education is to allow them to play with open-ended quality toys. Wooden toys are just that. Wooden blocks, wooden stacking toys, etc. are the perfect educational building toys. They encourage the development of early STEM skills and higher order thinking skills. Wooden toys are STEM toys! Educational building toys like wooden blocks and wooden stackers also foster a healthy sense of self-esteem, problem solving and persistence. Ditch the tablets and workbooks and grab some wooden toys instead.
